Coping with creative burnout with Maslach

Written by SOCIATE’s copywriting intern, Shanice Chrisel

The slow blinking of your cursor mirrors your thought process and sends you into a phased-out downward spiral. You can’t decide what’s worse – the crowd of pink sticky notes on your table or the clutter of tabs on your browser. Logging in feels like a chore and let’s be real, the stride in your step’s missing.

Constantly creating, innovating, and outdoing yourself can sometimes send your cogwheels out of gear. Constantly exceeding your good work with even better work, week after week could be why you’re feeling a little woozy; but lucky for you, you’re not the only one.

The Maslach’s Burnout Inventory lists three visitors that could knock on your door when you feel your spark disappear into thin air: emotional exhaustion, low personal accomplishment, and lower productivity.

With no wiggle room to break free from these unwanted (and might we add, rather rude) guests, coping with your day job may seem like quite the task.

Here’s what you can do to keep the clouds at bay:

If you WFH, it’s time to draw a line in the sand

Draw a line between your bed and your desk. Without clear boundaries, you could let your “me-time” creep into your work life. If you’re #teamWFH, keep your bed out of sight and out of mind. If you’re at the office, start afresh by tidying up your desk – arrange your desk organisers, bundle up and store loose pages away, and wipe everything down for an instant pick-me-up.

Get your do-not-disturb mode on

Tried and tested by us here at #teamSOCIATE, disable your phone’s notifications when your calendar’s got back-to-back deadlines. Power through for an hour and a half and reward yourself with your go-to treat of choice.

Don’t bite off more than what you can chew

Nodding your head to every little task sent your way could be why your check-list never seems to find its way to the end. When it comes to adding to your burning deadlines, know when to shake your head – after all, it’s “quality over quantity”.

Be mindful of others

If you did nod to a few tasks that are now giving you a splitting headache, check whether you can delegate the task to one of your colleagues. Look at their calendars and ~always~ ask whether they’re comfortable with adding another activity onto their to-do list.
